Overview
Smallest Volvo sedan, the compact S40, comes in T5 and T5 trim levels R-Design. Competitors include the Saab 9-3 and Audi A4. The less powerful "i" version was abandoned in 2011, while the engine is the line 227-horsepower five-cylinder engine in the T5 models.
Exterior
Little has changed on the outside, since 2009, the redesign, but Volvo says the 2011 models get a larger Volvo logo on the grill. Exterior features include:

Interior
The standard five-person interior decor is a bit 'rough, felt fabric, which is said to be inspired by sport. Leather upholstery is available. T5 R-Design trim with a unique aluminum sports pedals, gear knob and sport steering wheel. Interior features include:
- Standard locks and windows express up / down
- The standard eight-speaker audio system with six CD in-dash CD player
- Optional heated front seats
- Optional navigation system
Under The Hood
Only one engine is available for 2011, Volvo has dropped manual transmissions from the S40 line. Drivers have the option to shift gears via the automatic transmission. Four-wheel drive was also removed from the S40. Mechanical features include:
- 227 hp supercharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder 236 lb-ft of torque
- Five-speed automatic
- FWD
- Optional keyless start
Safety
Volvo is known for its safety and the S40 is no different. The car has a long list of standard safety features, including automatic activation of hazard warning lights illuminated when the deployment of airbags.
